Electrical apprentice numbers reach all-time high

A specialist training provider is enjoying a record uptake in apprenticeships.

Rebus Training, in Stoke-on-Trent, provides electrical apprenticeship training for 50 to 60 local companies as well as commercial electrical training for hundreds of others.

This year’s intake was bigger than ever before – with 170 learners now being trained.

Joint Managing Director Gary Jackson, himself a former apprentice who met business partner Jon Grocock when they were training together, said: “The number of electrical apprentices has risen over the past few years. We’ve now got more than we have ever had before – and more women than ever before too, which is fantastic.

“The government is offering good financial incentives for training, which gives us a boost, but in general the construction industry has been quite strong.

“This has meant there is an increased amount of work around and confidence has grown with employers.”

As National Apprenticeship Week approaches, Rebus plans to take to social media to highlight what it has to offer and its learners.

The week will kick off with an apprentice open evening on Monday, 6 February. Those interested will be able to tour the training centre on Westlake Trading Estate, in Tunstall, meet the apprenticeship team and get hands-on in the practical workshops.

The end of the week will see the company’s annual awards ceremony take place at Port Vale Football Club to celebrate the successes of its students.

Amongst those presenting the awards are the club’s co-owner and chair Carol Shanahan and former manager John Rudge.

Rebus, which employs 24 people, offers two electrician apprenticeship routes – one in installation and one in maintenance. Both typically take four years to complete.

  • The apprentice open evening runs from 6pm until 8pm. Pre-registration is preferred via this link
