Future plans for housing, transport, culture and growth in Stoke-on-Trent were taken directly to government in a meeting with senior cabinet ministers at 10 Downing Street.

Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Michael Gove MP chaired a 90-minute round-table talk in which Stoke-on-Trent City Council Leader Cllr. Abi Brown and Deputy Leader Cllr. Daniel Jellyman discussed the vision.

Also in the high-level meeting on Monday were ministers from six Government Departments as well as Stoke-on-Trent’s three MPs and senior leaders from national agencies including Homes England, Network Rail and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The talks focussed on three key areas – economic development and regeneration; transport (including the city’s plans to explore options for a very light rail system) and culture and heritage.

A council spokesperson said: “The city council will now bring together the many actions and opportunities that will flow from the meeting as it prepares for the next stage in the economic development of the city.”

Among the specific topics discussed were next steps on the Etruscan Square development in Hanley and the Twyford’s factory site in Shelton; rapid delivery of bus service improvements and the renewal of The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery and plans to rejuvenate historic buildings in Burslem.
