Work to transform a derelict historic pottery factory site into a modern living facility has received the green light – and it’s good news for local employment and traders.
Developer OVI Homes will redevelop The Crown Pottery Works, in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, into 58 apartments designed for the over 55s.
The developer has pledged it will employ locally where possible and is already set to appoint two apprentices and two work placement students.
The building, which housed John Tams Ltd until its closure in 2006, is seen as key to the story of North Staffordshire ceramics since the late 18th century and is a key gateway to Longton Town Centre.
On completion the Crown Works will be renamed Tams Factory, and give residents access to a communal space and an enclosed courtyard with planting and seating all in a safe environment.
The project, which has been awarded £6.3m of Levelling Up money, has been given the nod by Stoke-on-Trent City Council. Subject to planning approval, work will start later in the Spring.
OVI Homes Chairman David Taylor CBE said: “The Crown Works Development will transform the gateway to Longton and we have taken time and care to understand the specific challenges on site and the surrounding area to find a sensitive but contemporary building and landscape design that will help to kick-start further investment in the years to come.
“Our collaborative approach complements complex public and private regeneration, and we can see a lasting and productive relationship with the Stoke-on-Trent Council team and local stakeholders across the city on a broad range of projects in the future”.
