A teenager who is also a star striker for Port Vale has become the first female winner of an apprenticeship award.
Macy Isherwood has been named Apprentice of the Year by Stoke-on-Trent training provider Rebus Training.
The 19-year-old apprentice electrician, from Newcastle, is currently half way through her second year of training and works for Aspire Housing.
“I’m grateful to be the first female to win this award,” she said. “I hope it inspires younger girls to pursue a career in a trade.”
She added: “Winning the award meant a great deal to me, it’s an indication that my hard work has paid off.”
Macy picked up the title at Rebus Training’s annual awards evening held at Vale Park – where she is more used to being on the pitch playing in the women’s first team.
The awards night was attended by over 100 people, with thirty student nominees. There was also an award for staff member of the year and two awards given to people on the adults’ evening electricians course.
Amongst those presenting awards were former Port Vale Manager John Rudge and the club’s co-owner and chair Carol Shanahan.
Gary Jackson, Joint Managing Director of Rebus Training, said: “We had strong candidates for the award but Macy was a clear winner – she is a model student and puts 100 per cent effort into her learning.
“There is no reason why females can’t have a good career in this male-dominated industry and we hope Macy’s story helps to get that message across.”
Rebus Training has been fundraising for the Hubb Foundation, a charity founded by Carol, with the total raised before and during the awards night standing at over £560.
Daily Focus reported last month that Rebus is enjoying a record uptake in apprenticeships, including a bigger intake of female apprentices.
