Asthma team at University Hospitals of North Midlands receives international recognition

1 min read

A clinical team from University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) has been given international recognition for a project which provides treatment for patients with severe asthma.

The UHNM asthma team has been recognised by the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the British Thoracic Society (BTS) for its Accelerated Access Collaborative (AAC) project for severe asthma biological treatment.

Angela Cooper, Asthma Clinical Lead, has played a vital role in the success of the AAC project which provides effective treatment for sub-types of severe asthma by blocking allergic pathways in the body.

Angela has now been invited to present a poster to showcase the work that has been completed on the project at the prestigious ERS meeting in Milan next month.

Following this, the UHNM severe asthma ACC project abstract has been accepted for poster presentation in the Winter BTS conference in London in November.

UHNM Asthma Nurses, Alison Scale and Alison Ellis, said: “Angela’s dedication and hard work are an inspiration to us and our team members, motivating us to strive for excellence.

“She consistently works towards enhancing the quality of services provided and always promotes and prioritises the professional and academic development of staff to improve service quality.

“We are proud to work alongside Angela, an outstanding leader of the UHNM asthma team.”

As part of an AAC and Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) national programme of work, funding was secured to initiate 120 patients on asthma biologics at UHNM over 12 months. It has expanded and now there are over 200 patients on the asthma biologics.
