University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) has announced the appointment of Katie Berger as its Chief Healthcare Scientist, a brand new role for the Trust.

The role will play a key role in impactful health research, development and innovation and will help ensure healthcare scientists are fully involved in all aspects of the Trust, including training, development, research and quality improvement.

Katie has worked within pathology at UHNM for 30 years, starting initially at the Trust as a maternity cover lab assistant in Virology and progressed to become a Biomedical Scientist and later moving into a pathology quality and training role.

In January 2022, Katie became the Pathology Practice Educator, a regional role which was introduced initially to support and advance training during the Covid pandemic.

UHNM Medical Director Dr Matthew Lewis said: “I am delighted to welcome Katie as UHNM’s new Chief Healthcare Scientist.

“This is a role which will help to represent the views of healthcare scientists, and to make sure they are fully involved in all aspects of the Trust, including training, development, research and quality improvement.

“It is a positive step for the Trust and I know Katie will bring a wealth of knowledge to this brand new role.”

Katie said: “I am really excited to be starting the role as Chief Healthcare Scientist at UHNM.

“I am looking forward to raising visibility and becoming a spokesperson for healthcare scientists to showcase the amazing and varied roles that healthcare scientists undertake in the Trust.

“I’m ready to link in and build relationships with healthcare scientists to raise the profile and make a positive change and would like to encourage any scientists to contact me directly to establish a forum for the many different specialisms that we cover.”
