Businesses across Staffordshire are being reminded about further restrictions on the use and supply of single-use plastics that came into force at the start of the month.
The additional restrictions follow an earlier ban on the use and supply of single use plastic straws and stirrers in October 2020. The laws were introduced to help reduce the impact on the environment and to protect wildlife.
These latest restrictions, which apply from 1 October, include polystyrene cups and food containers, single-use plastic cutlery and single-use balloon sticks.
There will also be a restriction to the supply of plastic trays and bowls, although businesses can continue to supply these items if they are used as packaging in shelf-ready, pre-packaged food items.
The ban applies to businesses that supply the products, including manufacturers and retailers. Trading Standards officers from Staffordshire County Council are now working with the industry to ensure they are aware of their new responsibilities.
Victoria Wilson, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Trading Standards at Staffordshire County Council, said: “We all know about the harm that throw-away plastics can have on the planet, which is why this ban was introduced.
“We want to make sure that businesses who manufacture or use these products, are aware of the changes and why the ban is coming into force. Our officers have been supporting businesses since the first ban was introduced in 2020 and will continue to support them to make sure they understand and comply with the new laws.
“I know that many Staffordshire businesses will do their bit and what is required to help protect the environment. If we all try to use less disposable plastics, we can have a real positive impact on the planet.”
The ban applies to England only and further advice and guidance for businesses is available online.
