A North Staffordshire distillery is spearheading a campaign to get Wizzard’s famous hit to the top of the charts this Christmas to celebrate 50 years since it was first released.
Despite being a firm festive favourite, I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday only ever reached number four in the charts.
Daily Focus recently reported that Nelson’s Distillery and School, in Uttoxeter, has worked with Wizzard frontman Roy Wood to create a special limited batch gin to mark the song’s anniversary.
And a sell-out meet and greet to celebrate the launch of his gin at Nelson’s was recently attended by dedicated Roy Wood fans from all over the country.
Now Nelson’s and fans of Roy and Wizzard are encouraging as many people as possible to download the song to get it to Number 1 for Christmas.
Neil Harrison, founder of Nelson’s Distillery and School, said: “It is always a pleasure working with Roy and his gin has been a huge hit. It really is like Christmas cake in a bottle – perfect to share on the big day.
“We know how much it would mean to Roy to get I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday to Number 1. It is hard to believe it has been 50 years since it was first released – now is the perfect time to get it to that top spot.
“It has been part of Christmas for five decades now, sung at every festive party and enjoyed by generations. It is everything a Christmas song should be. Let’s get it to Number 1.”
Superfan Martin Kinch was among those at the event.
The 67-year-old, who was a young lad when he first started enjoying Roy’s music, said: ““I don’t think it’s too late to get it to Number 1, especially as it’s the 50-year anniversary. A lot of people assume it was a Number 1 hit so I think we should put it right so when people say it, it’s correct.
“It’s amazing that people are downloading it again.
“Most of the other Christmas hits have made it to Number 1 so I think Wizzard deserves it.”
John Woods, who travelled from Kent for the event, added: “It’s the Christmas song – full stop. The fact it never got there before means it would be brilliant if it did.”
