Commuter warning – main Stafford road set to undergo 11 weeks of major repairs

1 min read

A vital route into Stafford will be undergoing a series of major improvements from next week – lasting until mid-May.

The A449 Wolverhampton Road will be resurfaced on the stretch from the A34/A449 roundabout to Ingestre Road and the railway bridge, together with repairs to the kerbing, drainage and footways.

The scheme will last for 11 weeks from March 4, and to carry out the work safely temporary road closures will be needed.

From March 4 until April 21 and then April 29 to May 10 a one-way closure will be in place, with vehicles only able to travel northbound towards Stafford town centre.

There will be full week-long closures from April 22 and May 13.

A series of side road closures will also be needed, with dates and times still to be confirmed.

Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport David Williams said: “This is a major scheme on one of the main routes into Stafford and further demonstration of our commitment to investing in our road network.

“It’s an essential job and will bring long-term improvements but we understand there will be significant disruption throughout the works period.

“We’d ask people to allow additional travel time for diversions and plan alternative routes if possible.

“We will be providing regular updates on the scheme, particularly to local residents on side road closures, and would like to thank people for their understanding and patience while work is carried out.”
