A lynchpin employee at Tunstall-based Johnson Tiles has retired after almost 50 years’ service.
David Gerrard was the site kiln manager at the firm which is the UK’s only large-scale manufacturer of ceramic tiles.
When he began his career with Johnson at the age of 17 he was on £15 a week and still a student.
David had signed up to an engineering apprenticeship scheme at Moorland Road College from school and he was offered a position at the tile makers in 1976, while continuing his studies.
He developed general engineering skills, engineering drawing skills and tool-making skills in the Peakes and Platts department of Johnson.
During his 48-year career he held numerous positions including assistant toolroom manager and toolroom manager.
He played a key role in the Brownfields Project to oversee the installation and commissioning of the SL4 kiln and associated handling equipment.
After successful completion, he became one of the site maintenance managers where he was also responsible for the maintenance of all onsite kilns.
When the engineering team was restructured, Dave became the site kiln manager, controlling and maintaining all aspects of kiln activities and improvement projects.
Sophie Burke, Digital Manager at Johnson Tiles, said: “We wish Dave all the very best with his retirement. After his wonderful, long-spanning career he certainly deserves to put his feet up!”
