Brown Recycling wins prestigious industry award for environmentally-friendly ceramic sector innovation

1 min read

Leading waste management business Brown Recycling has scooped a top accolade at the 2024 Let’s Recycle Awards for Excellence event.

The family-owned North Staffordshire company was named winner of the Waste Management Initiative in the Retail, Commercial & Public Sector Award category.

Its submission highlighted work undertaken on a joint initiative with Geocycle, which focused on driving waste recycling and sustainability for Staffordshire’s ceramic industry.

Through this innovative recycling partnership, Brown Recycling collects pitcher waste from various pottery businesses in Staffordshire, including world-famous names such as Steelite, Churchill and Wedgwood for processing and crushing at its Stoke-on-Trent materials recycling facility.

The pitcher waste is then transported to Geocycle’s cutting-edge Lafarge Cauldon Cement Plant. There it is incorporated into cement production, replacing quarried virgin shale in the process – acting as alternative raw material.

Not only does this benefit the environment but it also creates economic opportunities by promoting resource efficiency and a secure and sustainable recycling route for pottery manufacturers in the region, with all activity occurring within a 20-mile radius across Staffordshire.

Brown Recycling was also a finalist in Waste Transfer and Skip Hire Business of the Year category, which recognised its actions in setting the standard for excellence in waste management and sustainability.

Commenting on the win, Mitch Brown, Co-Managing Director of Brown Recycling, said: “We were delighted to be shortlisted for two of the Let’s Recycle Awards in Excellence and thrilled to be announced as the winner of the Waste Management Initiative category award.

“This reflects the efforts and hard work the whole team at Brown Recycling has put in to making the innovative pitcher waste recycling project with Geocycle such a success.

“And it is great to have our efforts towards a greener, more sustainable future for Staffordshire and beyond recognised by our industry peers.”

Now in their 21st year, the prestigious Let’s Recycle Awards for Excellence, recognise innovation, dedication and success in the recycling and waste industry.

Entries are judged by a panel of experts with winners selected for the outstanding achievements delivered by both the waste management provider and their customers in recycling, reuse, and waste reduction.
