Sharon Owusu (Sha) from Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) has been selected as a finalist for the Learning and Development Award at the 2024 Staffordshire Chambers Business Awards.

This prestigious category is proudly sponsored by Genr8.

Born in Italy and raised in a rural African village in Ghana, Sha’s early experiences with limited healthcare sparked his interest in biomedical science and the medical profession.

Moving to the UK at 16, he joined NSCG Newcastle College in 2022 and has since excelled in his BTEC Level 3 in Health & Social Care, achieving high grades and taking on numerous roles to develop himself and support those around him.

Sha’s achievements extend far beyond academic success. As President of the College Student Union and a Student Governor, he represents the student voice at governance meetings, contributing to discussions with senior managers and governors. His involvement with the Association of College’s (AoC) Youth Collective group and the AoC Student Governors group highlights his dedication to addressing key issues such as mental health, cost of living, and student enrichment. At the national AoC Conference, Sha provided valuable insights into college life to over 100 college leaders.

Sha’s leadership skills saw him organising the first-ever AoC Student Summit at NSCG Stafford College, where he will lead discussions on student voice and empowerment with student leaders and senior managers from across England. His proactive approach to leadership, communication, and campaigning has significantly enhanced his confidence and skills.

The winner of the award will be announced at the highly-anticipated Gala Awards evening, taking place on Thursday, 4 July at the Doubletree by Hilton, Festival Park.
