TMT First has been named as a finalist for the Sustainability and Environment Award, sponsored by GivEnergy, at the Staffordshire Chambers Business Awards.
TMT First’s commitment to sustainability is exemplified through two primary initiatives: an innovative repair service in collaboration with Samsung and efforts to ensure the long-term sustainability of the mobile device repair workforce.
TMT First’s pioneering Mobile Component Repair (MC) service addresses the critical issue of e-waste by offering a sustainable and cost-effective solution for mobile device repairs. Instead of replacing entire assemblies, this sophisticated technique focuses on repairing specific damaged components, significantly reducing electronic waste and lowering repair costs for consumers.
In 2022, the Waste and Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) study estimated that 5.3 billion mobile phones would be discarded, many of which could have been repaired. TMT First’s MC method helps mitigate this issue, extending the lifespan of mobile devices and saving consumers up to £110 per repair. This approach also aligns with global sustainability goals by reducing carbon emissions associated with manufacturing new devices by up to 93%.
Over the past year, TMT First has spearheaded efforts to address the skills gap in the tech industry, ensuring the sustainability of the mobile device repair workforce. Founder and Chair Adam Whitehouse played a pivotal role in launching the Digital Device Repair Technician Apprenticeship scheme in partnership with the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfAte). This 21-month qualification will upskill the next generation of digital repair technicians, supporting the UK’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The category winner will be announced at the gala awards evening, set to take place on the Thursday, 4 July at the Doubletree by Hilton.
