Stone-based Wells Plastics has been named a finalist in the Manufacturer of the Year category at the 2024 Staffordshire Chambers Business Awards. This category is sponsored by Lexus Stoke.

Wells Plastics has been at the forefront of producing additive masterbatches and bespoke compounds for nearly 40 years. Recently, they have made a pledge to focus on sustainability, participating in several Innovate UK projects under the UK Research and Innovation initiative.

These projects, supported by government funding, drive productivity and economic growth by helping businesses realize the potential of new ideas derived from the UK’s world-class research base. All Innovate UK projects now require a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and recycling capability, providing a more science-based discussion on the environmental merits of materials, where polymers often excel.

With a deep understanding of the climate change crisis, they are committed to minimising negative environmental impacts locally and globally. They have introduce new company policies and regular monitoring of environmental KPIs.

This substantial effort earned them the ISO 14001 accreditation and an EcoVadis Gold rating, placing them in the 96th percentile of all registered companies. They also work closely with the Staffordshire Business & Environment Network (SBEN) and became a case study for their Environmental Sustainability GROWTHmapper®, saving over 33 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

The winner of the award will be announced at the highly-anticipated Gala Awards evening, taking place on Thursday, 4 July at the Doubletree by Hilton, Festival Park.
