Commuters are being reminded that a major road improvement scheme on one of the main routes into Stafford begins on 1 July.
The scheme will see improvements from the A34 Weeping Cross to the Queensville island. This will be followed by works on the section from Queensville to Queensway next spring.
Work will start then on the A34 at the Weeping Cross roundabouts on Monday.
This will include road and footway resurfacing from the junction into the town centre, new pedestrian crossings and cycleways. There will also be maintenance of the Grade II Listed Radford River Bridge.
Hundreds of people attended an information event on earlier this month at Wildwood Community Centre and people are being advised to visit the A34 webpage to find out more about traffic management.
The scheme will then progress along Radford Bank from September, including Radford Bridge, past Aldi and towards Queensville island.
At Weeping Cross, traffic management will include lane closures, temporary traffic signals and night-time closures for resurfacing (starting on September 16).
A one-way closure will be in place along the A34 Radford Bank, allowing traffic to travel towards town only for four months from early September and full night-time closures for resurfacing. Temporary traffic signals will be in place on the Baswich Lane bridges during this period.
There will also be lane closures on Queensville railway bridge while work takes place overnight on Saturdays during June and July.
Work needs to take place now and for the next 12 months due to national funding requirements. Once completed the road surface will last for between 20 and 30 years.
Staffordshire County Council’s assistant director for highways James Bailey said: “We’d like to remind people that this major scheme in Stafford gets under way on July 1. It will bring significant improvements to this stretch of the A34.
“There will be disruption for which we apologise for, but the team continues to work hard to minimise this as much as possible.
“We will of course keep people updated with information and progress on the scheme and would like to thank people for attending our event last Friday.
“We do need to carry out this work now due to national funding requirements and would like to thank people in advance for their understanding.”
