Teams from a roofing manufacturer raised just over £14,000 in a fundraiser which challenged them to travel to five different European countries in less than 80 hours.
Four teams of two departed from various UK locations with the aim of visiting five famous sites relevant to the industry, guided only by the clues provided, with strict cash budget and with a ban on flying apart from out of and into the UK.
The teams were made up of a Russell Roof Tiles member of staff plus one of the company’s customers or suppliers, all fundraising for the firm’s Give4Good charity initiative.
The race, which was inspired by the popular BBC TV show Race Across the World, ended in a tie with two teams receiving a £600 Michelin Star restaurant voucher and sharing a trophy.
Area Sales Manager Michael Palmer and Harvey Jackson, Managing Director of PJ Colours, completed the challenge in 49 hours and 32 minutes whilst Business Support Administrator Jade Jackson and her brother Danny Jackson finished in 50 hours and 32 minutes. However, Jade’s team spent €29.45 less than Harvey and Michael which saw an hour removed from their time.
Andrew Haywood, the Burton upon Trent-based firm’s Managing Director, said: “I’m incredibly proud of all the teams that took part in our Race Across Europe.
“The efforts towards both fundraising and taking part in such a big charity event have been great, and to have raised over £14,000 is a fantastic achievement, way beyond anyone’s expectations.
“A very well done to our two winning teams who completed the challenge in a truly impressive time.
“The event has been a huge success and shows that we really do like to go the distance for fundraising at Russell Roof Tiles.”
The five locations the teams had to visit are The Little Mermaid statue in Denmark, Brandenburg Gate, in Germany, Anne’ Frank’s House in the Netherlands, the Menin Gate, in Belgium, and the Mona Lisa, in France.
Give4Good was set up to aid communities local to the company’s sites in Burton upon Trent and Lochmaben.
Russell Roof Tiles has pledged to raise £50,000 for 12 charities through numerous events in 2024.
Other fundraisers include a paddleboard marathon and a comedy night.
