General Election 2024: Staffordshire results echo Labour’s dominance

2 mins read

Staffordshire has gone to the polls and played an instrumental role in delivering Labour to a landslide victory in the General Election.

A total of 12 constituencies covering the entire county returned 9 Labour and 3 Conservative MPs to parliament in the historic election. As Daily Focus went to press Labour was on course for a significant victory across the country with Keir Starmer’s party set to win well over 400 seats.

Locally, Stoke-on-Trent-North, Central and South constituencies changed hands from Conservative to Labour, while veteran Conservative MP Sir Michael Fabricant was ousted by Dave Robertson in Lichfield.

Meanwhile, Newcastle-under-Lyme also turned red as Labour candidate Adam Jogee beat Conservative candidate and Borough Council leader Simon Tagg into second place. While Burton and Uttoxeter was won by Labour’s Jacob Collier.

Former Education Secretary Sir Gavin Williamson claimed victory for the Conservatives in the new seat of Stone, Great Wyrley and Penkridge. While former Tory Northern Ireland Secretary Dame Karen Bradley was victor by just over 900 votes in Staffordshire Moorlands.

In Tamworth, Labour’s Sarah Edwards held on to the seat she won in a by-election last year while Conservative Theo Clarke lost her Stafford seat to Leigh Ingham.

And in the new seat of Kingswinford and South Staffordshire, formed following boundary changes, Mike Wood claimed victory for the Tories.

Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce Policy Adviser Declan Riddell said: “We congratulate all incoming MPs across Staffordshire and we’ll be writing to each MP with a copy of our Business Manifesto, asking for a meeting with our members at the earliest opportunity.

“We certainly hope for a far more stable Parliamentary term, with the previous one being dominated by a global pandemic, double digit inflation with accompanying rise in interest rates, global conflicts, supply chain issues, and challenges to find and retain the right calibre of staff.

“This Parliamentary term is due to take us to the cusp of the fourth decade of the 21st Century and there is much to do.  We very much hope that our newly elected members will work with us in driving the growth of our economy, whilst meeting Net Zero ambitions.”
