Lichfield store achieves net zero status

1 min read

A Central Co-op food store in Lichfield is among the retailer’s first four stores to achieve net zero.

The status means that the Streethay building produces as much renewable energy as it consumes, effectively cancelling out its carbon emissions.

Energy Performance Certificates rate the energy efficiency of buildings on a scale from A, which is the most efficient to G. The new build store on Yoxall Way has been given an A rating.

Central Co-op and its programme delivery team implemented a variety of innovative strategies to achieve net zero status in two stores and carbon negative status in another two, with solar energy becoming a cornerstone of the Society’s sustainability initiatives.

A spokesperson said: “Central Co-op’s achievement of net zero status in four stores, with two stores reaching carbon negative, highlights its commitment to sustainability within the retail industry.

“Through innovative strategies, including renewable energy adoption, energy-efficient practices and waste management initiatives, Central Co-op is on track to not only meet but exceed government targets for energy efficiency in many of its stores.

“As the Society continues to pave the way towards a greener future, its commitment to environmental responsibility serves as motivation for retailers across the UK.”

A programme to install solar panels across 185 of Central Co-op’s retail and funeral locations was launched last year.

Energy-efficient appliances such as state-of-the-art refrigeration cases, LED lighting and low-energy air conditioning systems are also being installed to cut electricity consumption.

Improvements are being made to waste management practices and deliberate choices have been made in the selection of environmentally-friendly building materials and construction methods, particularly around insulation.

The Society is working towards becoming self-sufficient in green energy by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2040.

Central Co-op is one of the largest independent retail co-operative societies in the UK, with a heritage stretching back over 180 years and interests in food, funeral, floral and property investment.
