Major highways scheme in Tamworth moved to early next year

1 min read

A major highways improvement scheme in Tamworth is has been re-scheduled for early next year.

The £1.1 million project at Aldergate and Upper Gungate will see the reconstruction and resurfacing of the road between Lichfield Street and Comberford Road.

Works will also include improvements to a section of Offa Drive along with repairs to kerbs and ironworks in the area.

The Staffordshire County Council scheme is part of a wider, more than £50 million investment in the county’s roads over the next three years.

The work was originally due to commence this summer, but due to some essential gas supply works identified, the works have been moved to start early next year, likely February.

It is expected that the works will take around 12 weeks to complete and details of traffic management and timings will be available closer to the time.

Rob Prichard, Cabinet Support Member for Highways South at Staffordshire County Council, said: “Good roads are vital for people and for our local economy, which is why we are investing more than £50 million in them over the next three years.

“This is a busy part of Tamworth and a key route through the town.

“While the delays due to the gas works are disappointing, it means that by combining the works we can resurface more of the road, passing Croft Street and ending at Fountain Junction instead.  It also means we can avoid two separate and disruptive closures of the road.”
