A team working to improve earlier diagnosis of lung cancer has been shortlisted for a national award in a scheme celebrating the work of those in the health and care sector.
The Staffordshire Lung Health Checks Team, part of the University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM), has made it through to the final round of the NHS Parliamentary Awards 2024 after being nominated for the Health Equalities Award by David Williams MP.
The awards welcome nominations from MPs around the country to highlight exceptional commitment and achievements of people working in their constituency.
This year, 318 MPs across England put forward 918 nominations across 10 categories – a far greater number than any previous year.
Janina Barnett, Programme Manager for Staffordshire Lung Health Checks said: “We were thrilled to be nominated for this award, and I am delighted that the team have been recognised for their hard work and passion for reducing health inequalities, the work undertaken is substantial and we will continue to strive to deliver the highest quality care to all.”
The Health Equalities Award is for an individual or organisation that works to bring together different groups and organisations to reduce health inequalities and prevent ill health in their community.
The Staffordshire Lung Health Checks Team delivers a programme offering lung health checks to 55 to 74-year-olds who are current of former smokers.
It is estimated that the programme will diagnose around 9,000 cancers earlier.
The team has been chosen as the Midlands finalist for the award, with the winner set to be decided by a panel of national judges made up of notable figures across the healthcare sector.
The awards ceremony takes place in Westminster next month.
