Green light for car park demolition means town’s £20m regeneration project can progress

Planning permission has been passed to demolish an eyesore multi-storey car park and units in Cannock.

The scheme has been described as ‘a major step forward in the ambitious plans to revitalise the town centre’.

The glass canopy above Cannock Shopping Centre will be removed, the multi-storey car park and two units will be demolished, a third will be partially demolished and a temporary compound will be erected.

Preparatory works relating to road and access improvements will begin in late October with demolition works commencing in November. Initially these will be internal, where preparations will be made for full demolition starting immediately in the new year.

Units to be demolished include a former sweet shop, the Salvation Army and a bed shop. Internal work will be undertaken to allow other units to be integrated into the shopping centre.

The space created following the demolition of the buildings will enable the construction of a retaining wall and the new steps and ramps will be constructed, along with the new café.

Demolition of the multi-storey is set to start late spring 2025.

Councillor Tony Johnson, Leader of Cannock Chase Council, said: “Securing planning permission for the next stages of our Cannock town centre regeneration project is a significant milestone.

“This project isn’t just about the demolition of old structures, it’s about laying the groundwork for a modern, vibrant town centre that will attract new investment, and create a welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.

“We are excited to see work begin and to deliver these positive changes for our community.”
