Businesses and fans raised £100,000 to make a bronze statue honouring Port Vale legend John Rudge, which was unveiled on his 80th birthday.
Rudge, who holds the record as the longest-serving manager in Port Vale’s history, led the club from 1983 to 1999, managing 843 games.
Under Rudge’s leadership, Port Vale achieved remarkable success, securing three promotions, winning the Football League Trophy in 1993, and reaching a post-World War record finish of 8th place in what is now the Championship in 1997.
Rudge’s teams became known as the “Giant Killers,” famously defeating top-tier clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and cup holders Everton in the FA Cup, while also fiercely competing against local rivals Stoke City.
Funds for the statue were generated through various events, sporting fundraisers, sales of Rudge’s book “To Cap It All,” and generous donations from lifelong fans, local businesses and Reading FC supporters following the abandonment of the fixture last season.
The statue, created by Staffordshire-based sculptor Michael Talbot, stands over 5 metres tall, including the base, and is prominently positioned in the Hamil Road Car Park at Vale Park. The design is inspired by an iconic photograph of Rudge on the sidelines, wearing his famous flat cap while directing his team.
John Rudge said: “Port Vale has been a big part of my life and career where I enjoyed huge success as a manager. I’ve been fortunate to have signed some magnificent players, and I always say you’re only as good as your players.
“People ask me who my greatest signing is and I say my wife Del. Thank you to her and my two daughters for all of their support over the years. Today’s statue unveiling at Port Vale is a huge honour, and I truly thank all the supporters and committee who have made this happen.”
