Residents are invited to celebrate the Potteries on the first annual Stoke-on-Trent Day next year to mark the 100th anniversary of gaining city status.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council plans to make the day a yearly celebration of the history, culture and environment of the city, as well as the communities who live there.
And officials are urging residents to put Thursday, June 5 – the date that King George V declared Stoke-on-Trent a city in 1925 – in their diaries and plan their own events to honour the city.
The local authority is also planning a weekend of celebration on Saturday, June 7, and Sunday, June 8, with events for all to enjoy and show pride in their city. They are hoping to create ‘a mass-participation carnival feel celebration’ with everyone from resident associations, sports clubs, schools, colleges and the university to businesses, charities, youth groups and performing arts groups all getting on board.
City council leader, councillor Jane Ashworth, said: “Whether you are born and bred in one of the six towns, moved away, or recently made Stoke-on-Trent your home, you are a ‘Stokie’ to us. We want everyone to celebrate this small city, with a big heart.
“From street parties to cleaning up the city, I am calling on every resident to fly the flag of this great city.”
