A range of talks and activities are set to bring heritage to life in the county town next month for Stafford History Day.
The event – a collaboration between Stafford Town Partnership, LR Partnership, Staffordshire Cultural Events and Stafford Borough Council, supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund – is set to take place on Saturday, 1 March, and aims to highlight the rich heritage of Stafford.
From 10:30am to 3pm, Stafford Castle will come to town with a living history display in the Market Square, including historical weaponry demonstrations and handling, coin minting, brass rubbing and chainmail and armour to try on.
The Ancient High House will host a talk about the craftsmanship of Stafford’s embroidered textiles at 10:30am and another focusing on the witch marks found on the walls of the house at 2pm. A free 45-minute guided tour will leave the Ancient High House at 11:30am taking in landmarks like St Mary’s Church, St Chad’s and the Alms Houses.
The Staffordshire History Centre will hold a pop-up exhibition exploring the history of Victoria Park alongside free, family-friendly craft activities. Throughout the day, there will also be spotlight talks showcasing fascinating historical artefacts from Stafford’s past.
St Mary’s and St Chad’s churches will be open to visitors, and shops and businesses will be decorated with pictures and memorabilia.
Parkinson’s UK Stafford Branch will also be celebrating their 40th anniversary with an awareness and fundraising event in Market Square on the same day, including a classic car filled with balloons for a ‘guess the number of balloons’ competition.
