A former Stoke-on-Trent apprentice has been named Apprentice of the Year at a national awards ceremony.

Brooke Chomyn, who joined Unitas in January 2022 as a Level 3 Business Administration apprentice, was recognised at the APSE National Building and Housing Awards. She is now a full-time resource controller at Unitas after completing her studies.

Described as conscientious, confident, adaptable and outstanding, Brooke was praised for her ability to save time, money and resources through fresh ideas and process improvements. She was also recognised as a role model to others for her growth in decision-making, project management and interpersonal skills.

Beyond her work at Unitas, Brooke has spoken about apprenticeships at several events for care leavers and young people and volunteers her time at The House Project, mentoring other young people. She also sits on the Children’s Fostering and Adoption Panel, assessing prospective carers.

Unitas’ corporate social responsibility co-ordinator Rachel Forster, who mentored Brooke throughout her apprenticeship, said: “I am so proud of Brooke and her achievements. She demonstrates that through sheer grit and determination you can achieve great things for yourself and also help to change the lives of others.”

Mark Freeth, Unitas’ interim director, added: “Brooke has excelled since day one. It’s fantastic to see her efforts and work get recognised at the awards, recognition that is well and truly deserved.”

APSE, the Association of Public Service Excellence, holds the annual awards to recognise outstanding apprentices and the councils that provide high-quality training and employment opportunities. The awards aim to highlight the importance of apprenticeships, particularly in challenging economic times.
