Cheadle businesses and residents are being invited to shape the future of one of the town’s most iconic buildings.
Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has called for feedback on plans for Cheadle Market, which they purchased for £260,000 at auction last September.
The building and surrounding outdoor marketplace are regarded as ‘central’ to plans to regenerate the town due to its ‘strategic position’ on the High Street.
Suggestions for the space include an event and performance venue, flexible office or workspace, exhibition space, or holiday lets.
The council are also considering potential enhancements should the space remain a market, such as improved hospitality offerings and extended opening hours.
Councillor Matt Swindlehurst, Cabinet member for Leisure and Tourism, said: “We want to see our towns thriving and buying the market is a key part of our plans to regenerate Cheadle and boost the local economy.
“This market, on the High Street, will be at the heart of that so it’s essential that whatever we invest in is viable and makes a significant contribution to the future success of the town.
“Lots of people will have views about the market and we want to hear from everyone who is also interested as we consider options for its future. We look forward to hearing from you.”
The council is exploring various options for the space and is particularly interested in feedback on the following questions:
- Should the building continue to function as a market?
- If not, what alternative uses could be considered?
- If it remains a market, how can it be improved?
This consultation presents a unique opportunity for Staffordshire businesses to influence the development of a key commercial space in Cheadle.
