Community flag project to showcase local creativity in North Staffordshire town centre

1 min read

A new art initiative will see a North Staffordshire town centre transformed with colourful flags designed by local artists, as part of a summer-long outdoor installation.

The project, led by Newcastle-under-Lyme Business Improvement District (BID), will feature around 70 selected flag designs displayed along High Street, Ironmarket and Castle Walk throughout the summer months. Artists of all ages encouraged to submit their artwork to be featured in the display.

There are three entry categories: children aged up to nine, young people aged 10 to 17 and adults aged 18 and over. One winner from each group will receive a £150 prize, and selected entries will be professionally printed and included in the town centre installation.

The theme of the competition is People and Place, and participants are invited to submit artwork that reflects what Newcastle means to them – whether it’s a local landmark, a personal connection or a favourite location in town.

Charlotte Pearce, Manager of Newcastle-under-Lyme BID, said: “It’s going to be amazing to see Newcastle-under-Lyme bursting with colour this summer, thanks to the creativity of our local community. From the youngest artists to adults, we’re inviting everyone to take part and share what this town means to them.”

The BID will also be hosting public art workshops to support people in creating their submissions. Details of these events will be announced soon.

Entries, which must be submitted by Friday, May 23, can be sent via email to [email protected] or delivered in person to the Newcastle BID office at 4 Fogg Street, Newcastle, ST5 2RE.
