Central Co-op has announced a proposed merger with another co-operative society.
The Lichfield-based organisation – one of the largest independent retail co-operative societies in the UK – is working with Chelmsford Star Co-operative to explore ways to bring the two together.
The proposals were announced during the United Nations’ International Year of Co-operatives 2025.
Under the plans, Chelmsford Star Co-operative will likely transfer into Central Co-op.
The organisation has said this will have no impact on Central Co-op’s stores or the colleagues who support them.
And it is not anticipated that there will any ‘significant’ impact on Central Co-op colleague numbers as a result of the proposed transfer.
Together, the two Societies aim to build a stronger co-operative that champions communities, empowers colleagues and delivers greater value for members.
Tony Price, President of Chelmsford Star Co-operative and Elaine Dean, President of Central Co-op said: “Central Co-op and Chelmsford Star Co-operative are committed to putting the interests of our members first and supporting the communities where we trade.
“The transfer will ensure that all members continue to have an important voice as part of a stronger, more secure Society – ready to serve them for many more years to come. Both Boards are supportive of this transfer of engagements and the exciting opportunities that it presents.”
Central Co-op serves customers across more than 450 trading sites in 22 counties including Staffordshire. Its businesses include food, funeral and property investment.
Chelmsford Star Co-operative has served communities throughout Essex for more than 150 years with 34 food stores, nine funeral homes and two travel agencies.
The proposed transfer requires approval by members of Chelmsford Star Co-operative at two Special Members’ meetings being held in July and August.
