Ex-footballer joins finance firm to help ‘make a difference’

1 min read

A former professional footballer who represented Zimbabwe and England at international level has joined a growing financial planning firm based in Staffordshire.

Cliff Moyo, from Hanley, spent almost a decade in football before a career-ending injury prompted a major career change. Now 32, he has joined Evergreen Financial Planning as a financial advisor, supporting clients across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire.

He retrained as a protection advisor after his injury, later gaining a Level 4 CII Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning.

Cliff said: “Football taught me resilience when things do not go your way, grit to work hard and to build a foundation when the chips are down.

“The experience I gained from football has really helped me to transition into the world of finance and it’s been a matter of adapting and altering the skills I already had and using them in a different environment.

“It was not easy by any means, but it is one that I am truly proud and grateful for.”

His football career began at 15, when he represented England Schoolboys at U15 and U16 level, and he went on to play professionally for clubs including Barrow AFC, Alfreton Town, Halifax Town, Guiseley and Kidderminster Harriers, where he was club captain. In 2017, while at Halifax, he received his first international call-up for Zimbabwe.

Evergreen Financial Planning was formed in 2023 following the merger of businesses owned by Nathan Waldron and Ryan Nobbs. The firm offers advice on areas including retirement planning, protection, investments and estate planning, and has expanded rapidly across the Midlands, Scotland and East London.

Cliff, , pictured above ready for work, is now working closely with director Nathan Waldron to grow Evergreen’s services in the Stoke-on-Trent and wider Staffordshire area.

He said: “The transition from football to finance was one that really tested me emotionally and mentally. All I ever knew was football and when this stopped due to a career-ending injury it gave me a different perspective and the importance of planning for the future.

“I want to help people not just for the short term but for the long term. There was a time in my life when I really needed help and due to my experience this motivated me to help make a difference in other people’s lives.

“My aim while working at Evergreen is to grow both professionally and personally and what better team to be part of than one that is constantly evolving, helping and encouraging each other.”

Nathan, from Stone, added: “Cliff is a fantastic addition to the Evergreen team and brings not just his own life experiences of finance but also skills which work so well within the industry.

“We are delighted to have Cliff join us and he is a great member of the team.”
