Artist Ian goes ‘under the sea’ for New Vic Little Mermaid residency

Award-winning Stoke-on-Trent artist Ian Mood has been appointed Artist in Residence for the New Vic Theatre’s Christmas production of The Little Mermaid, documenting the creative journey from rehearsal room to opening night.

Mood, known for his expressive seascapes and landscapes shown in UK and US galleries, will capture on-stage and behind-the-scenes moments through sketches and paintings during the production process. His completed works will go on display at the theatre in February 2026.

This marks the third major theatre residency of his career, following previous collaborations with the National Theatre (The Madness of George III) and Royal Exchange Manchester (Mother Courage).

Ian, pictured, said: “What’s really exciting about this residency is capturing the tremendous work that’s happening both on and off stage, the production, design, costume and everything in between.

“It’s wonderful to be honouring the long-standing relationship between artists and theatres in a contemporary way.”

The residency reinforces the New Vic’s commitment to creative collaboration and cross-arts innovation, connecting visual and performing arts while strengthening Staffordshire’s cultural profile.

The Little Mermaid runs this Christmas at the New Vic, with Mood’s exhibition following in early 2026.
