One year ago, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat, near Stone, was hit by flash flooding and a mudslide, forcing it to close.
Here, director Penny Weston reflects on what happened and how the business has grown since.
“Every business has defining moments in its story. For Moddershall Oaks, ours came in came in September 2024 when a freak weather event caused flash floods and mudslides to sweep through its grounds. The impact was immediate. Buildings were flooded, facilities left unusable, and the entire team faced the reality of an unexpected closure.
Remarkably, Moddershall Oaks fully reopened in just five weeks, far sooner than anyone thought possible.
Now, one year on, what felt like devastation at the time has become part of our identity, a reminder of the strength of its people and the incredible support of the local community.
Despite the setback, Moddershall Oaks’ focus was immediate, supporting guests, rescheduling weddings, and relocating events. Perishable food was donated to local food banks, and against all odds, weddings scheduled just weeks later, went ahead as planned.
The wider restoration took immense effort. With the dedication of staff, contractors, and the local community, weeks of cleaning, repairing, and reinforcing the property followed.
One year on, Moddershall Oaks stands stronger, safer, and more committed than ever to creating exceptional experiences for its guests.
When guests come to us for relaxation, celebration, or connection, they can trust they’re stepping into a place that has weathered the storm, and emerged even stronger and more beautiful on the other side. We are looking forward to a peaceful autumn/winter 2025.
Less than six months after reopening, we unveiled its new Woodland Pods unique accommodation that blends modern comforts with the tranquillity of the Staffordshire countryside for adults and families. This development marked not only a milestone in expansion but also a symbol of resilience and forward momentum.
Moddershall Oaks extends heartfelt thanks to all who offered support during that challenging time and we look forward to the next chapter with optimism, strength, and gratitude.”
