T Levels: NSCG’s Owen Smith goes far

1 min read

As part of a Daily Focus campaign highlighting T Levels, Newcastle and Stafford College Group (NSCG) shines the spotlight on student Owen Smith who is looking forward to a career in the construction industry.

Owen completed his T Level in Electrical Installation and Building Services at NSCG, gaining first-hand experience of the construction industry through his placement with 24-7 Group.

During his placement, he explored every stage of project delivery, from design and estimating to on-site installation, applying his classroom knowledge to real-world challenges. His professionalism and drive impressed the team so much that he was offered an apprenticeship upon completion of his course.

Owen thrived in the collaborative environment of his T Level, learning alongside peers who shared his goals and ambitions. He credits his lecturers, many of whom have years of industry experience, with preparing him for the realities of working life. Their insight and guidance gave him the confidence to step into the workplace ready to contribute from day one.

Now completing an apprenticeship with 24-7 Group, Owen continues to develop his skills while adding value to his employer’s projects. His journey shows how T Levels not only prepare students for successful careers, but also help employers identify, train and retain talented young professionals.

Adam Barber, Operations Director at 24-7 Group, highlights the practical benefits of T Level placements: “Having learners completing a T Level placement with us puts us in the position of being able to make a more informed decision over their suitability. It also gives learners the chance to determine if a career in this industry met their expectations.”

These placements are increasingly seen as a valuable stepping stone to apprenticeships or full-time employment, allowing learners and employers to assess fit, build trust and plan for long-term success.
