Panel of skills experts to advise Staffordshire businesses on workforce development

A team of skills experts have been lined up to speak at an event aimed at helping Staffordshire businesses to attract and develop new talent.

Staffordshire Chambers’ next Big Business Breakfast event will examine what recent changes to the skills and education system mean for businesses, with practical guidance on upcoming reforms and how employers can develop their workforce.

Gemma Marsh, Deputy CEO of Skills England, will outline how changes to apprenticeships – including foundation and shorter apprenticeships – can help businesses to develop new talent.

Gemma will be joined by Patrick Milnes, Head of Policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, who will set out forthcoming policy changes and explain how businesses can influence the national skills agenda.

Tom Nadin, Deputy CEO at Staffordshire Chambers, will give an overview of the new Local Skills Improvement Plan and highlight the county’s key skills gaps, while Jenny Scrivens of Stoke-on-Trent College will provide advice on funding, recruitment, and onboarding for apprenticeships.

The morning will conclude with a panel of local businesses sharing their experiences, followed by a cooked breakfast and networking session.

Chris Plant, Interim CEO of Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, said: “We know that many businesses are feeling overwhelmed by the pace of change in the skills system.

“Employers keep telling us they want clearer information and real, practical advice they can actually use.

“This event is about bringing all of that together in one place and helping local businesses feel more confident about planning for the future.”

The Big Business Breakfast takes place at the bet365 Stadium in Stoke-on-Trent, from 8.15am to 12.00pm on Friday, 23 January. It is open to both Chamber members and non-members.
