By Jack Pettit, Apprenticeship Manager and Lyndsey Cherry, Group Head of Employer Partnerships, Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG).
At NSCG, we believe that strong employer partnerships are the foundation of a successful skills system. Working closely with businesses across our region allows us to support workforce development, create real opportunities for learners and ensure training is aligned with industry needs.
From an apprenticeship perspective, we are proud to offer employers a free recruitment service for our apprenticeship provision. This service is designed to remove barriers, save time and connect employers with motivated candidates who are ready to develop the skills their organisations need now and in the future. We support employers throughout the entire process, from vacancy advert design and advertising, through to shortlisting and induction.
Jack explains: “As Apprenticeship Manager, I see first-hand the impact this has. Our free recruitment service takes the pressure off employers and ensures they are matched with the right apprentice for their business. It’s about making apprenticeships accessible, effective and valuable for everyone involved.”
Beyond apprenticeships, employer engagement plays a vital role in shaping our wider curriculum. Many employers support learners through meaningful T Level industry placements, offering students the chance to apply their learning in real workplace settings. Others contribute through work experience opportunities or by acting as guest speakers, bringing industry insight directly into the classroom.
From a strategic partnerships perspective, this collaboration is essential. Lyndsey explains: “When employers engage with our learners—whether through T Level placements, work experience, or guest speaking—they help bridge the gap between education and employment. These experiences build confidence, develop employability skills and often inspire learners to pursue careers they hadn’t previously considered.”
Together, these activities create a strong talent pipeline that benefits both learners and employers. Learners gain invaluable real-world experience, while employers have the opportunity to shape future talent, raise their profile and contribute to the long-term growth of their sector.
For us, it’s about partnership, not just provision. By working together, we can ensure learners are prepared for the world of work and employers have access to skilled, motivated individuals who can make a real difference.
If you are an employer interested in recruiting an apprentice, supporting a T Level placement, offering work experience, or sharing your expertise as a guest speaker, we would love to hear from you.
