Lidl’s new Rugeley supermarket moves forward after legal challenge

1 min read

Work has begun on Lidl’s new multi-million-pound store in Rugeley, which is expected to create up to 40 jobs when it opens next spring.

The development on a town centre brownfield site on Power Station Road is now underway after planning delays linked to legal action brought by rival supermarket Tesco.

A judicial review was launched after planning permission was granted and Tesco sought legal action. Lidl said it has since worked with Cannock Chase Council to overcome the legal challenges and move the development forward.

A Lidl spokesperson said: “With these hurdles cleared, Lidl can now deliver on its promise to bring much-needed retail competition to the area to give households the best value possible.”

Joe Caunt, regional head of property at Lidl GB, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to finally break ground in Rugeley. We know the community has been following this journey closely, and we want to thank residents for their incredible patience and support while we navigated the planning delays.

“Everyone deserves the right to choose where they shop and access high-quality, affordable food. We are excited to finally bring our great value products to the town and look forward to keeping the community updated as construction progresses.”

Vacancies are due to go live in the coming months. Anyone interested in applying for a job is advised to keep an eye on Lidl’s careers page

The new store will feature a 1,334 sqm sales area and is close to 2,300 new homes being built at the former power station site.
