Five prominent figures from business, education, emergency services, the voluntary sector and international human rights are to receive honorary doctorates from University of Staffordshire at its summer graduation ceremonies.
Among those being recognised is entrepreneur Andrew Pear DL, founder of Stoke-on-Trent-based Reliance Medical. The University of Staffordshire alumnus will receive the Award of Doctor of the University (Hon DUniv) in recognition of building one of the leading manufacturers and distributors of first aid and medical supplies while supporting education, entrepreneurship and community initiatives across the region.
Former Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service chief fire officer Rob Barber KFSM will receive the same award. He dedicated almost three decades to the fire and rescue sector with notable leadership at both local and national level before retiring last month.
The first of two Awards of Doctor of Letters (Hon DLitt) will be presented to Heather McLachlan, chief executive officer of the Potteries Educational Trust, for her contribution to education and her commitment to improving opportunities for young people across Stoke-on-Trent and the wider Midlands.
The other will be presented to Saltbox charity chief executive Lloyd Cooke, pictured above, who has spent almost 38 years in the role supporting vulnerable communities and fostering collaboration across the public, voluntary and faith sectors.
Internationally respected human rights lawyer and advocate Dr Muluka-Anne Miti will receive the Award of Doctor of Laws (Hon DLaws). The United Nations Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by persons with albinism has played a significant role in advancing global awareness and protection for vulnerable communities facing discrimination and violence.
Interim vice-chancellor and chief executive Professor Philip Plowden said: “These honorary graduates each embody the values we champion at University of Staffordshire – leadership, compassion, resilience and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world around them.
“From supporting vulnerable communities and shaping the future of education, to driving entrepreneurial success and championing human rights on the global stage, their achievements are truly inspiring. We are proud to recognise their impact and celebrate them alongside our graduating Class of 2026.”
The honorary graduates will be recognised during ceremonies at the university’s Stoke-on-Trent campus between 13 and 21 July.
