Work has begun to demolish the former Wilko’s store in Stafford as part of regeneration plans for the town centre.
Stafford Borough Council’s planning committee passed plans to knock the store down during a meeting last week.
The Broad Street site was purchased by the local authority last year and is earmarked for a potential college expansion.
The site also includes the Shop Mobility single-storey building and the Broad Street car park.
The borough council said more than 70 car parking spaces – including disabled bays – will still be available, and that the public toilets remain open.
The acquisition and demolition have been funded by central government with work expected to take around 12 weeks to be completed.
