Stone businesses warned as town centre roadworks get underway

1 min read

Businesses and commuters in Stone are being urged to plan ahead as a major road improvement programme gets underway in the town centre today (13 July).

The scheme will affect several key routes including Stafford Street, Crown Street, Newcastle Street, Station Road, Granville Square and Radford Street.

Work will include repairs to kerbs, footways, drains and the installation of tactile crossing points.

The project is scheduled to be completed by 23 October, with road resurfacing work due to take place in the autumn.

To allow the work to place safely, temporary traffic signals will be in place and manned between 7am and 5pm on weekdays.

During the resurfacing phase, from 7 September to 16 October, some overnight road closures will be required between 7pm and 6am. Locations and timings of the closures will be publicised nearer the time.

Patrick Allen, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet support member for highways, said: “These are busy roads around Stone so this scheme is important as it will bring huge improvements for motorists in a thriving town centre.

“Our project team carried out thorough design and preparation works earlier this year. This ensures that we have a high-quality scheme that can be carried out as quickly as possible.

“Some of this scheme has been scheduled over the schools’ summer holiday to minimise disruption. We understand that with any traffic management however, primarily on such a busy route, there will inevitably be some delays for which we would like to apologise for in advance.

“We’re always grateful for people’s understanding whenever we’re carrying out improvements.”
