Five hospitality businesses in Lichfield District have completed energy-saving projects expected to cut their carbon emissions by more than 22 tonnes a year.
The projects received almost £40,000 through Lichfield District Council’s Energy Saving Scheme, funded by the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
More than £72,000 has been awarded overall to help businesses reduce energy use, lower operating costs and improve the sustainability of their premises.
Solar photovoltaic systems have been installed at Blackbrook Barns, the Cathedral Hotel and Aspire Design, allowing the businesses to generate renewable electricity.
The George Hotel has introduced heating and refrigeration optimisation measures, while The Hub at St Mary’s has replaced lighting with energy-efficient LED systems.
Councillor Janice Silvester-Hall, cabinet member for visitor economy, ecology and climate change, said the investments would help businesses reduce bills and strengthen their resilience.
She added: “Through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund we’ve been able to support a range of practical projects, from solar panels to smarter heating systems and energy-efficient lighting, helping businesses become more sustainable while reducing day-to-day operating costs.”
Kevin Sharkey, of Blackbrook Barns, said the venue was investing in growth and wanted sustainability to form part of that expansion.
“The funding we received has helped us invest in solar PV, reducing our reliance on grid electricity and making the venue more energy efficient and sustainable for the future,” he said.
Lucia Piovesana, of Webb Hotel Group, said the funding had helped the family-owned business improve energy efficiency while preserving the character of its historic hotels.
She said: “This funding has allowed us to take meaningful steps towards improving energy efficiency and reducing energy consumption, supporting both our sustainability goals and the long-term future of our hotels.”
The council’s scheme is part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund programme supporting business growth, sustainability and stronger communities.
