Pre-tax profits have more than doubled at a groundworks and civil engineering contractor which is planning to open its eighth regional operation this year.
Tamworth-registered M&J Evans Construction recorded pre-tax profits of £8 million in the 12 months to 31 December 2025, up from £3.8 million in the previous year.
In the same period, turnover was up 15.8% to £374.3 million, operating profit rose 70.2% to £8.7 million and the firm’s order book grew 6.5% to £537 million. Orders won during the year totalled £339.3 million.
The growth same despite a subdued housing market, with some housebuilder delaying the start of projects.
A strategic report reads: “The company has benefitted throughout the year from a healthy order book and with work starting on several new sites during the period, despite the wider housing market remaining somewhat subdued with some housebuilders delaying the start of projects.
“The business remains focussed on self-help measures to provide resilience, including overhead control, working capital management and strong cash collection.
“Therefore, despite the challenging environment seen during the past few years, the business remains fully committed to its plan for growth and efficiency and has continued to see steady performance in the new Eastern Counties region during its second year of trading.”
The region contributed £22.03 million to the year-end order book.
M&J Evans Construction plans to open in the South East – its eighth region – later this year, with further expansion planned beyond that.
During the year, the company continued to invest in its workforce, including launching a bespoke groundworker apprenticeship at its training depot.
The scheme reports a 100% completion rate for its first cohort of 16 apprentices, compared to the national average of 42%.
M&J Evans Construction has also taken its first steps into the utilities sector, generating £5.5 million in revenue in 2025.
CEO Alex Clack said: “FY25 was a year of strong financial and operational delivery for M&J Evans, with significant growth in profitability and continued progress against our five-year strategy. I’m proud of the momentum we’ve maintained in delivering our strategy, from the continued scaling of our Eastern Counties region to the launch of our NHBC apprenticeship programme and our broader plans for launching into the utilities sector.
“Having spent over 20 years with this business, I understand its strengths, its people and its strategy intimately. While the wider market backdrop remains uncertain, our order book, balance sheet and operational discipline give me real confidence in our ability to deliver for our clients and continue our growth journey.”
The company employed an average of 315 people over the financial year.
