Menopause, often referred to as the silent transition, is a natural stage in every woman’s life. Yet, despite its inevitability, it remains shrouded in secrecy and met with unease. Here, Nuffield Health’s Dr Janey Merron – General Practitioner Specialising in Menopause – sheds light on the condition, the statistics that lie behind it and support availalble.
“Menopause is not just about hot flushes and mood swings. It’s a profound biological shift that affects a woman’s physical and emotional well-being. Recognising the signs and symptoms is crucial to helping women navigate this transition. These symptoms can include digestive issues, sleep disturbances, mood swings, vaginal dryness, and more. However, the experience can vary greatly from woman to woman.
There can be many reasons why menopause occurs earlier – it can happen naturally, or it can be due to receiving treatment for cancer, or following a procedure such as a hysterectomy.
Shocking statistics reveal the magnitude of this issue. In the UK the average age is 51. But around one in 100 women experience the menopause before 40 years of age.
In the UK alone, around 13 million women are either peri-menopausal or menopausal. Yet, surveys show that a significant percentage of women feel ill-informed and unsupported during this stage. According to a University College London study, 90% of postmenopausal women were never taught about the menopause at school. This lack of awareness and support can lead to unnecessary suffering and a diminished quality of life.
Nuffield Health takes a holistic approach to menopause, recognising that each woman’s experience is unique. They understand that managing menopausal symptoms requires more than just addressing the physical aspects. It involves supporting women mentally, emotionally, and physiologically.
Support Options Available
There’s a range of evidence-based support options available out there to help women manage their menopausal journey:
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
HRT can alleviate many menopausal symptoms by replacing hormones that the body no longer produces in sufficient quantities.
Non-HRT Treatments
For those who cannot or prefer not to use HRT, there are alternative therapies and lifestyle changes that can help manage symptoms effectively.
Mental Health Support
Menopause can take a toll on mental health. Talking therapies and counselling services can help women navigate this emotional journey.
Physiotherapy
Menopause can lead to pelvic issues such as incontinence, pain, or prolapse. Physiotherapy can offer valuable solutions to address these concerns.
