Three apprentices from Newcastle-under-Lyme based sheet metal fabricators KMF will be tasked with building a pizza oven in the finals of a prestigious skills competition.
They will be doing so on home ground because the WorldSkills UK National Final in Sheet Metalwork Technology is being hosted this year by their employer.
The KMF Precision Sheet Metal UK apprentices will face off against Coleg Cambria’s competitor during the high-profile national event from 31 October to 3 November.
The Sheet Metalwork Technology strand of the WorldSkills UK competition is sponsored by Dave Vaughan of Engineering Skills Competitions who has set the task.
The finalists will be asked to create a working pizza oven designed by Dave.
They have three days to accomplish the build in advance of the awards ceremony at KMF where first, second and third place will be announced.
From KMF, fourth year Fabricator Standard Level Three apprentices Aidan Sneyd, 19, Kyle Marshall, 19, and James Holdcroft, 21, will compete against one another as well as Coleg Cambria competitor Joel Eccles, 19, an Apprentice Sheet Metalworker at Lester Cladding Ltd.
Matt Page, Apprentice Trainer at KMF, said: “Each of our apprentices was entered into the regional qualifiers and the top three-point scorers have made it to to the final.
“The event is a great opportunity to progress their personal development and to put everything they’ve learned for the past three years into practice.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity as they come to the end of their apprenticeship.”
WorldSkills UK supports people across the world via competitions-based training, assessment and benchmarking.
This year the Sheet Metalwork Technology strand is being delivered as an industry competition.
