Alton Towers Resort has announced the permanent closure of its spa, affecting up to 10 jobs.

The on-site spa closed on 31 December, in a decision which was said to be “difficult” but “essential for the future growth and development of the resort.”

The focus is now on supporting its staff, with the resort looking to reassign as many as possible to other roles.

Guests with bookings are being refunded or provided with alternative options at the resort.

It has not yet been revealed what will take the place of the award-winning spa.

An Alton Towers Resort spokesperson said: “After careful consideration, we have taken the difficult decision to close the Spa located on-site.

“This was a difficult decision but one we feel is essential for the future growth and development of the Resort.

“Our top priority has been supporting our employees at the Spa during this time, including with advice on career opportunities available across the Resort.

“We are also in the process of contacting guests with bookings in 2024 to discuss alternative options.

“We sincerely appreciate the loyalty and support of our valued guests and dedicated colleagues throughout the years.”

The spa, which was open all year round and available to non-hotel and park guests, launched in 2003 and was attached to the Alton Towers Hotel. It was previously a pirate-themed pool.

Its facilities included nine treatment rooms, a steam room, a tepidarium, saunas, multi-sensory showers, foot reflexology baths and a swimming pool with whirlpool and jacuzzi.
