UHNM director secures NHS England advisory role

1 min read

University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust’s (UHNM) Director of Midwifery has been appointed to a nation role to help improve maternity services.

Sarah Jamieson’s post as a National Maternity Improvement Advisor will see her work in partnership with other trusts to support development needs in areas such as quality and safety improvement, governance, and staff engagement.

The 12-month secondment will see her split her time between NHS England and UHNM.

Sarah, who has been in her UHNM role since 2021 and has recently been shortlisted for a Nursing Times Award, said: “I’m really excited to have begun this role, working as part of a team of around 12 other maternity improvement advisors with Trusts across England who are on the NHS England Maternity Safety Support Programme (MSSP) and require additional support to improve their maternity services.

“It’s a massively exciting opportunity for us at UHNM in terms of having somebody on the inside and being able to bring back my learning from other organisations and teams.

“As my time will be split in half between roles, it also creates succession planning, allowing my deputy here at UHNM to gain experience at director level and others to grow and develop further down the chain.

“I feel fabulous to have been successfully appointed to this important role, giving me the opportunity to work with the national NHS England midwifery team and gain exposure and experiences that will be of benefit to our maternity services here at UHNM.”

Ann Marie Riley, Chief Nurse at UHNM, added: “I’m absolutely thrilled that Sarah has been appointed to this national role.

“She has transformed maternity services at UHNM, leading with care and compassion and creating a thriving environment for her staff.”
