City centre pub reopens tomorrow

1 min read

Titanic Brewery will open its first new pub in five years tomorrow.

The brewery, based in Stoke-on-Trent, announced earlier this year that it had acquired The Pig in Lichfield.

The Tamworth Street venue, which had been empty since October last year, has undergone a short refurbishment over the past few weeks and will reopen as The Beacon at 12pm.

The new name recognises Lichfield’s Beacon Park, a thriving community space that is also home to a statue of the captain of the RMS Titanic, Stoke-on-Trent-born Edward Smith.

Twelve jobs have been created with the venture – and the companies involved in the renovation including the joiners, decorators, shopfitters, designers, electricians, signwriters, metal fabricators were almost exclusively Lichfield-based.

Local suppliers are used wherever possible. They include sustainable gin producer The Apiarist, who infuse their products with local honey and are based across the road from the pub, and local butchers Walter Smith who are supplying pork pies and sausage rolls.

Titanic Brewery Director Dave Bott said: “This is the first traditional pub that we have opened since 2019, having spent the last five years focussing on our bod café bars, however as soon as we knew this venue was available we saw the potential for a thriving community-focussed pub.

“A pub has stood on this site for over a hundred years, and whilst the name has changed many times, it has always been a place where local residents have come together to meet, socialise and enjoy fine drinks in fine company.

“We’re really excited to be starting a new chapter in this pub’s rich history, and look forward to sharing this space with the Lichfield community once again.”

The Beacon is Titanic Brewery’s 17th pub and follows the opening of a bod café bar in the city last July.

Its bar will be stocked with some of Titanic’s most popular beers, which will be joined by ever-changing beers from guest breweries, both local and from further afield.

Two beers brewed in collaboration with Birmingham-based Attic Brew Co will be available upon opening.
