Leek to host culture and heritage event

1 min read

Leek’s newly refurbished market halls will host an event celebrating the county’s heritage and culture later this week.

The first We Are Staffordshire Ambassador event of the year will also be one of the first events to take place in the town’s indoor market halls following a multi-million-pound investment project.

Being held on Thursday, 16 January, the event will see Staffordshire Moorlands District Council Leader Councillor Mike Gledhill speak about the refurbishment of the markets.

He will be joined by representatives from OUTSIDE ArtsStaffordshire History Centre and Teapot Factory CIC.

Councillor Gledhill said: “I can’t think of a better venue for this event which is all about the importance of Staffordshire’s heritage and history and how we can use that as a platform to celebrate our unique culture.

“The project we’ve delivered at Leek market is the perfect example and showcases what can be achieved when we focus on our heritage and culture whilst providing the quality amenities for residents and visitors to enjoy. The benefits will be felt across the district and the wider region.

“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved and I’m looking forward to welcoming people to the Moorlands and our Butter and Trestle Markets to see the results for themselves and hear more about how we did it.”

Daily Focus reported in December, when the markets reopened, that new arrivals included The Slamwich Club and Scrumbles Cake Shop, both of which are popular choices in the North Staffordshire food scene.

We Are Staffordshire, which was established in 2020, spearheads promoting and marketing of the county as a prime location to live, work, study, visit and invest.

Head of Place Marketing Louisa Shaw said: “We hold a number of free events throughout the year to showcase our county, its assets and organisations.

“We’re excited to be holding our first one of the year in Leek in their newly refurbished market hall.”

A limited number of places for the A Place of Heritage and Culture event, which takes place between 2pm and 4.30pm, are still available.
