British fashion designer Christopher Bailey and a small group of investors have acquired ceramics brand Burleigh Pottery, ensuring that production will continue in Stoke-on-Trent without interruption.
The historic firm went into administration with its parent company Denby Pottery in March but enters a new period with the completion of the deal with the ex-Burberry Group chief executive and chief creative officer and the other investors.
Christopher said: “I have always loved Burleigh pottery. This company has an extraordinary history, and what makes it so special today is the skill, care and creative spirit that continue to define the business. It is a privilege to become part of that story.
“I am deeply committed to protecting and showcasing the craftsmanship and character that make Burleigh unique, while helping to shape its future as a distinctive and meaningful British design and ceramics house.”
Burleigh, based at Middleport Pottery and also known as Burgess & Leigh, dates back to 1851 and is the last heritage pottery in the world still using its distinctive tissue transfer printing technique.
A spokesperson said: “Burleigh is enormously grateful to its craftspeople and wider team, its loyal customers, partners and collaborators and to the Stoke-on-Trent community for their continued support, belief and resilience throughout this period.”
Welcoming the news, Stoke-on-Trent North and Kidsgrove MP David Williams said: “This is wonderful news for Burleigh, for our city, and for our skilled, passionate and dedicated workers who have made this iconic company globally recognised for the quality and craftsmanship of its products.
“I am delighted that Christopher Bailey recognises the unique heritage, expertise and craftsmanship that make Burleigh so special. His remarkable experience and international reputation will be a tremendous asset to the business, and I warmly welcome him to our city.”
Derbyshire-based Denby Pottery ended manufacturing earlier this month. Its collapse followed three years of ‘challenging market conditions’ including soaring costs and low consumer confidence.

I am so relieved and grateful to all who have crafted this solution for Burgess and Leigh. Thanks to David Williams MP for his behind thee scenes work too. Burleigh ware is an integral part of Burslem’s manufacturing heritage and the mainstay of the historic canalside located Middleport Pottery rescued by Reform_Heritage UK. Christopher Bailey will bring a new perspective to the many partners working alongside Stoke on Trent City Council to restore prosperity in Burslem and will be welcomed with open arms.
