Major discount retailers Home Bargains and Lidl are expanding their presence in North Staffordshire from today following millions of pounds of investment into the area.

Home Bargains will open its second Newcastle-under-Lyme store on Saturday, 13 June following a £3 million investment in the former Homebase unit on Lyme Valley Road. The 19,687 sq ft store has created 72 jobs and will open at 8am.

Store manager Daryl Tyler said: “We are incredibly excited and proud to be opening our new store. Bringing together a café, bakery, and garden centre under one roof offers something unique and different for the local community.

“We have built an outstanding team who are ready and eager to welcome customers and provide a fantastic experience from day one.”

Meanwhile, Lidl was due to open its latest Stoke-on-Trent supermarket at Festival Park at 8am today (11 June). The store has created around 40 jobs.

The opening is being celebrated with complimentary food sampling and special prizes up for grabs.

Dominic Bryan, regional head of property for Lidl GB, said: “We are thrilled to officially open our seventh store in Stoke-on-Trent.

“This fantastic new store is a direct response to the local demand for high-quality, affordable groceries, and we couldn’t be prouder to welcome the community inside.

“A huge thank you to everyone who helped us turn these plans into a reality – we can’t wait to start making a real difference to your weekly shop.”

The retailer is inviting nearby schools to join Lidl Foodies, a programme which encourages the next generation to develop a love for healthy eating. Ready-made workshop plans are available for teachers, with more information available here.
