More than 100 jobs could be created if plans for a new automated warehouse for Tile Mountain are approved.
The Stoke-on-Trent-based company wants to demolish the existing buildings at the former H&R Johnson Tiles site off Harewood Street in Tunstall and replace them with a new warehouse facility.
Tile Mountain currently occupies five buildings nearby, including its flagship showroom and warehouse.
Planning documents submitted to Stoke-on-Trent City Council say the proposed facility could create around 102 jobs, including 60 pickers and packers in the warehouse.
The roles would be split across two shifts, with the planning application stating that they would equate to around 51 full-time positions.
The proposed warehouse would provide 25,557 sq m of space, almost half the footprint of the existing buildings, which cover around 48,000 sq m. The smaller footprint would allow more landscaping across the site, although the new building would be taller than those currently on the site.
A planning statement reads: “The proposal would allow for the expansion of an existing local employer, in an established employment area, providing highly skilled jobs within a new high-quality design facility.”
It adds: “The development will form the final phase of development by the applicant in this area, utilising brownfield land within a regeneration and Enterprise Zone.
“The proposal would provide jobs and growth in the local economy.”
It goes on to urge the council to approve the application “without delay”.
A decision on the plans is expected to be made by 25 November.
