Martin Murray has announced his decision to step down as leader of Staffordshire County Council.

In a statement, Cllr Murray said the decision followed careful consideration and was in the “best interests” of the county.

He will also step down as the leader of the council’s Reform UK group.

Cllr Murray became acting leader in December 2025 after his predecessor, Ian Cooper, resigned from the role. He was subsequently appointed permanent leader in March 2026.

Cllr Murray said his time as leader had included delivering a balanced budget, protecting frontline services and securing investment in highways, children’s services and community facilities.

He also highlighted his work to promote Staffordshire’s economic ambitions, support investment and strengthen skills and employment opportunities.

Cllr Murray said: “I step down with a clear conscience and immense pride in what we achieved together.”

He said his focus had been on ensuring Staffordshire remained a place where businesses could invest, communities could thrive and residents could succeed.

He highlighted major employers and institutions including JCB, Indurent, JLR, Finning, Keele University and Keele University Science and Innovation Park, alongside the county’s thousands of smaller businesses.

“They are a reminder that Staffordshire remains one of the great manufacturing heartlands of Great Britain and a county with enormous potential for the future”.

Cllr Murray also pointed to his work to raise the profile of Staffordshire’s tourism, leisure and hospitality sectors, highlighting attractions including Alton Towers, Drayton Manor, Trentham Estate and Cannock Chase.

He added: “I have long believed that our county should be recognised not only as a centre of industry and innovation, but also as a destination where people come to relax, explore and create lasting memories.

“That is why we branded Staffordshire as The Nation’s Playground.”

“I have always believed Staffordshire deserved a stronger voice and greater recognition, and that’s why I called Staffordshire: The Beating Heart of the Country.”

Reflecting on his departure, Cllr Murray said it had been a privilege to serve the people of Staffordshire and work alongside councillors, officers, businesses, community organisations and residents.

“While my time as Leader has come to an end, my commitment to Staffordshire and the people of Cannock remains unchanged,” he said.

He concluded by wishing the council and its new leadership every success in the years ahead.
